Phil won the 5th Wycombe Masters
Phil has won some tournaments, and lost many many more ... but overall
he's won money ... he thinks ... not much, certainly, but some. To any
attractive, single women impressed by such things, though: he has won
shitloads.
In his own words
I like poker because I like gambling. Not so much the adrenaline rush of money risked, but the seductive dream of getting filthy rich by doing very little. First up I thought i would win big by betting on sport. It all started well. Whilst still a struggling student I risked 20 whole
pounds on Paul Scholes to score first against Portugal in Euro 2000. Fans of the game might remember that he did. I was ?140 to the good! Clearly gambling was brilliant.
Obviously I very quickly gave it, and more, back to Mr William Hill and others. I am not an expert on matters of football, darts, bowls, snooker or any other of the sports I tried. Latterly I have had some modest success with American Football, and I'm ahead ?150 lifetime
betting on FHM's High Street Honeys, but it was clear that for the purposes of 'winning big' I had to look elsewhere.
The beautiful game sucked me in from the first episode of 'Late Night Poker'. Sure, I was concerned that they only had two cards, and that Jesse May's commentary was frequently baffling, but I soon found my feet and it became clear I needed to play. My favourite thing about the program was that dodgy looking bloke, called 'the bandit', being introduced as 'in the scrap business'. Yeah, just like Tony Soprano is in 'Waste Management'.
I began for real, like all great players, one evening whilst drunk. I downloaded Littlewoods Poker, told it my switch card number, and a few minutes later was taking a seat in my first ever poker game: a sit n' go for 5 earth pounds. I was expecting to be outclassed, but that didn't
really happen. I eventually went out in third, and made a profit of 4 quid. Rock and roll! I've been playing ever since.
I mostly ply my trade on a wednesday with the other people you see on this site. One of the finer things about poker is its ability to bring together disparate, motley bunches like the Phat Dogs. Can't think of any other reason why we'd all come together, but it's a pleasure to know
each and every one of them. It's an extra pleasure to be able to take money off them.
