Phil won the 5th Wycombe Masters

Phil has won some tournaments, and lost many many more ... but overall
he's won money ... he thinks ... not much, certainly, but some.  To any
attractive, single women impressed by such things, though: he has won
shitloads.

In his own words

I like poker because I like gambling.  Not so much the adrenaline rush of money risked, but the seductive dream of getting filthy rich by doing very little.  First up I thought i would win big by betting on sport. It all started well.  Whilst still a struggling student I risked 20 whole
pounds on Paul Scholes to score first against Portugal in Euro 2000. Fans of the game might remember that he did.  I was ?140 to the good! Clearly gambling was brilliant.

Obviously I very quickly gave it, and more, back to Mr William Hill and others.  I am not an expert on matters of football, darts, bowls, snooker or any other of the sports I tried.  Latterly I have had some modest success with American Football, and I'm ahead ?150 lifetime
betting on FHM's High Street Honeys, but it was clear that for the purposes of 'winning big' I had to look elsewhere.

The beautiful game sucked me in from the first episode of 'Late Night Poker'.  Sure, I was concerned that they only had two cards, and that Jesse May's commentary was frequently baffling, but I soon found my feet and it became clear I needed to play.  My favourite thing about the program was that dodgy looking bloke, called 'the bandit', being introduced as 'in the scrap business'.  Yeah, just like Tony Soprano is in 'Waste Management'.

I began for real, like all great players, one evening whilst drunk.  I downloaded Littlewoods Poker, told it my switch card number, and a few minutes later was taking a seat in my first ever poker game: a sit n' go for 5 earth pounds.  I was expecting to be outclassed, but that didn't
really happen.  I eventually went out in third, and made a profit of 4 quid.  Rock and roll!  I've been playing ever since.

I mostly ply my trade on a wednesday with the other people you see on this site.  One of the finer things about poker is its ability to bring together disparate, motley bunches like the Phat Dogs.  Can't think of any other reason why we'd all come together, but it's a pleasure to know
each and every one of them.  It's an extra pleasure to be able to take money off them.

What the other members say about Phil

Lindz - Phil is a nice bloke and one of the best players in Phat Dogs, he thinks about  the odds, and has the discipline to lay down big hands if needed. Phil is good at raising his game and I often don't notice his chip stack untill too late, although I did enjoy playing him heads up.

G - The quiet man. The most consistent player in the group. He plays very well and it can't be too long before he hits the pro status. Also a nice guy. Deserves to go out with Kate Beckinsale. (Might need to shave more often though!!). Very few holes in Phils game and he is a very strong player. Watches everyone like a hawk and never looks at his cards until everyone else has. Plays pot odds with a calculator's perfection and calls alarmingly well. The only comment I have about Phil is that I wish he had slightly more confidence. Phil you really are as good as we all say - BELIEVE IT!! You're also a top bloke. He has always lost to me heads up though!

Steve - Ping Pong was formerly known as Mr. Consistent and he didn't get that monicker for nothing - he is the best in Phat Dogs. Ker-ching! That'll be a fiver Phil (other Dogs please note my rate will be increased next year). But then that just makes him the no.1 target. Never plays irrationally, never on tilt, always focused. Although we found out he could be psyched momentarily by referring to his beloved table tennis as "ping-pong" it's going to take a lot more than that since it became his new nickname. And its not just ping-pong that he misses poker for - other girly sports like American Footbawl too - so, perhaps we should question his commitment?

Top tip: Next time you put him all-in, ask him how the netball's going.

Pete (slag) - Top bloke, plays poker almost as good as me.

Baz - The Jack Nicholson look alike, now ping pong is one of the poker gods, read every book there is to have and knows every correct move. A patient player who waits for the kill and normally succeeds. I just wish we could all club together to get him a few razor blades just so he could have a shave now and again... But one of my hero's... lov ya Ping Pong J

Andy - Phil has established himself as one of the most consistent and hardest to read phatdogs. I'm sure that Phil would do very well if he raised his game and went onto becoming a sponsored player. But for now you are going have to play those pocket rockets the same as your 63 off. And I still know your tell! Can you remember the last time me and you got into a huge pot together?

Dave - Knows how to play well in theory, and puts it into practice. Aformidable opponent with results that prove it. Has a dry sense of humour and there really is just nothing bad you can say about him. Top bloke.

Marty - A decent quiet fellow with little to say. A person that keeps very much to himself and always plays the mathematical odds. He's a patient player who has the ability to pull off some brilliant bluffs and make people question themselves. Few chances are taken by Phil, so when he's in on a pot, calling raises, be afraid, be very afraid!

Craig - Top bloke, even if he does like folk music.  Pokerwise?  Crap. No not really but he knows that as does everyone else.  Although  I havn't really taken him on heads up yet, and I'm convinced I could nail him;o).

Jesus - I don't know what to say about Phil, he keeps his personality as close to his chest as his cards, I never no quite what he's doing and I certainly don't like it when he cracks my pocket KK with an all in bet on J10, Q, rag, rag, followed by runner runner K, A!

Del - He makes me think of 'Scooby-do' whenever I see him.   Maybe it is his unshaven appearance or his floppy joe pullover, whatever it is this macho man must be on the short list for the next 'Bond' movie!  And like 007 this slick customer plays like a true professional.  He rarely loses any real money and is often on the money list.  A really nice guy.

Nick - Probably the most rounded player out of the Phatdogs. Has a good combination of all of the winning aspects of the game. He can 'do the Math' as well as anyone. Don't give him too much respect though because he has been known to do the odd blag here and there.

Pete (new/doc) - I've not seen him caught bluffing, which doesn't say that he doesn't do it, just that I've not seen him caught. He delights in the maths side of the game and is aggressive when he catches cards. I first thought him to be a Rock and still think he should play a bit looser.
